Madrid.- El Banco Mundial (BM) ha puesto en marcha reformas para financiar proyectos enfocados en la crisis climática y la transición verde en América Latina y el Caribe, con más recursos y tasas de interés más bajas, según su vicepresidente para la región, el colombiano Carlos Felipe Jaramillo.
En una entrevista con EFE, Jaramillo confirmó que el organismo está adelantando reformas para financiar a la región con “más recursos, en algunos casos recursos concesionales”, así como con menores tasas, para hacer frente a los grandes retos globales relacionados con el cambio climático.
“Se habla de aportes, que sería algo muy novedoso, para países de renta media, incluyendo América Latina, de manera concesional, o sea por debajo de las tasas de interés y los términos que el Banco usualmente ofrece”, adelantó el vicepresidente para América Latina y el Caribe del BM.
Este anuncio va en la línea de la declaración de la última cumbre del G20 donde el presidente de EEUU, Joe Biden, abogó por una reforma del Banco Mundial y del FMI con el objetivo de ofrecer a las economías en desarrollo una alternativa a los préstamos de China, principal acreedor de países emergentes.
Con las reformas, el BM espera ser “más rápido y más ágil”, declaró Jaramillo, y además celebró que la asignación de recursos para proyectos que enfrenten “los retos globales no discriminan”, por lo que sus beneficios alcanzarán a los países de bajos ingresos y los de renta media.
El acceso a créditos en mejores condiciones, incluso “más baratos”, estará condicionado para inversiones relacionadas con la adaptación y mitigación a desastres climáticos (sequías, inundaciones y huracanes), el control de la deforestación, así como con la financiación de la transición verde.
Solo en el ejercicio de 2022, el BM aprobó financiamiento por un valor de 10.400 millones de dólares para un total de 55 operaciones en la región.
